Window tint rules are set by the state and cover how much light your glazing must let through, so it pays to know where you stand before film goes on. This guide explains how the regulations work, what they are trying to protect and how film choice fits alongside them.

Where glazing does not meet the state's requirements, the outcome is decided by the authorities and the courts rather than by the installer. A driver may be asked to correct the film and show that it has been dealt with, and repeated issues are treated more seriously than a first one. Confirm the current rules with the state authority, and keep a record of the film and shade fitted to your vehicle.
Removing non-compliant film can leave adhesive behind, and the defroster lines on many rear windows need care during the process.
Regulations are written separately for passenger vehicles and for multi-purpose vehicles, and they set out what is permitted window by window. The diagrams below show how those categories are treated. Confirm the current figures with the state authority before choosing a shade, then talk to an installer about which film delivers the performance you want within that limit.
Passenger Vehicles
Passenger vehicles include sedans, coupes and convertibles. The rules for this category set out the permitted levels for the windshield, front side windows, rear side windows and rear window, so the same film can be treated differently depending on where it goes.

Kepler IR and IR+ are nano-ceramic films. Visible light transmission and solar heat performance are separate, so compare the exact film and shade rather than judging by how dark the glass looks.

Kepler films are applied by independent installers who work with the ranges every day and know how they behave on different vehicles and glazing. They will look at your glass first, then recommend a film and shade that matches what you want from it, whether that is glare control, solar heat performance or a particular finish.
How Kepler works
Kepler makes the film, not the tint job. Independent tinting businesses install window film. For a project, ask a local tinter whether they carry Kepler film or can get it, then arrange the work directly with that shop.

Enforcement outcomes for non-compliant tint are set by the state and applied by the courts, so they vary from case to case. In broad terms, a driver may be asked to bring the vehicle back into compliance and show that the film has been corrected, and repeat issues are treated more seriously than a first one. Because the details change over time, check the current rules with the state authority rather than relying on a summary. Choosing film and staying compliant are two separate jobs: an installer can advise on shade and performance, but the responsibility for meeting the law sits with the vehicle's driver or owner.
