Choose the Right Kepler Film for Your Tesla

Kepler builds two nano-ceramic automotive ranges. IR is the ceramic step up from dyed film and the more accessible of the two; IR+ is metal-free ceramic and carries Kepler's highest published infrared figures. Both come in shades that run from near-clear to very dark, and the cards below show how each one changes the look of the car.

Film Made by Kepler, Fitted by Your Dealer

Kepler manufactures window film and supplies it to independent tinting businesses; we are not the company that fits it. That split is the point. Kepler can concentrate on what the film is made of, down to the metal-free ceramic build, the 1.5 mil thickness, the ultra-bond adhesive and the scratch-resistant top coat, while the dealer you speak to handles the car, the quote and the appointment.

Keeping Heat Out of the Cabin

A Tesla puts a lot of glass between you and the sun, and everything that comes through it is heat the air conditioning has to deal with. Kepler publishes total solar energy rejection of 51% to 72% across the IR+ shades, so less of that energy reaches the cabin in the first place. How much difference you notice depends on the car, the weather and the day, so treat it as comfort rather than as a saving you can budget for.

Solar Energy Stopped at the Glass

The IR+ range is a metal-free ceramic film, which means the ceramic layer targets infrared energy instead of simply darkening the window. Kepler lists infrared blocking of up to 98% on the darker IR+ shades and 93% on the near-clear Photon. Those are manufacturer figures for the film under its own test conditions, not a prediction of cabin temperature.

Cooler Glass, Cleaner Look

Film does two jobs at once. It cuts glare and ultraviolet coming through the glass, with Kepler measuring under 1% UV transmittance across the IR+ shades, and it settles the look of the car. Because the ceramic layer contains no metal, Kepler describes the film as signal-friendly, without the mirror-like appearance and signal issues associated with metalized tint.

How Kepler's Ceramic Film Is Built

Kepler's ceramic ranges are designed so that heat control does not depend on dark glass. The infrared work happens in the nano-ceramic layer rather than in the shade, which is the same principle behind low-emissivity glazing coatings that block radiant energy while letting visible light through. It is why a light Kepler shade can still carry a high infrared figure, and why picking a shade for your Tesla comes down to looks and to what Delaware allows on each window.

Heat Control Without Going Dark

A heat-box demonstration is a quick way to see what a ceramic layer does to infrared energy passing through glass. When you compare two films properly, look at total solar energy rejection as well as the infrared figure: Kepler publishes 98% infrared blocking on its darker IR+ shades, and total solar energy rejection between 51% and 72%, because infrared is only one part of what the sun delivers.

Made for Tesla's Big Glass

Teslas face the sun with more glass than most cars: a wide windscreen, long roof panels and deep rear windows. Kepler's IR+ film is made for that kind of surface, metal-free and 1.5 mil thick, with total solar energy rejection published between 51% and 72% across the shade range. What the film cannot do is fit itself. How it is cut and applied to your car is the installer's work, and Kepler's warranty covers the material rather than the fitting.

How the Layers Stack Up

Reading outwards from the glass, the stack runs through an ultra-bond adhesive, a UV absorber, the tinted film, a laminating adhesive, the nano-ceramic infrared layer and a scratch-resistant top coat. Every Kepler shade is 1.5 mil thick and finished with the same Scratch Guard+ coating, so the build does not change when you change your mind about the shade.

The Figures Kepler Publishes

These are Kepler's published figures for the IR+ range, and they move with the shade: infrared blocking is highest on the darker films, glare reduction falls as the film gets lighter, and ultraviolet transmittance stays under 1% throughout. The Warranty Information covers film failure caused by a manufacturing defect for the life of the vehicle, and claims go through the business that installed the film.

Two things usually decide the film you end up with: how you want the car to look, and what Delaware allows on each window. Check an indicative price for your Tesla online, or read the state limits first if you are weighing up a darker shade.
