Safety and security window film is a strong, clear film applied to existing glass. Its layers and adhesive are designed to keep the film bonded to the pane, so when the glass is struck the fragments tend to stay attached to the film and in the frame rather than falling clear. That does two things: it slows an attempt at entry, and it reduces loose glass after an accident or impact. It does not make glass unbreakable and it is not a guarantee against entry or injury. It suits homes, shops, offices and public buildings, and the film that fits depends on the glazing already installed.

The film is bonded across the face of the pane, so an impact at one point is spread through the film instead of simply opening a hole in the glass. Broken glass is held together, which means anyone trying to get through has to keep working at it — slower, noisier and more visible — and there is less loose glass to fall on the people nearby. That is why film is common in schools, offices and public buildings where large panes sit close to occupants. Security film improves the odds and buys time; it is not a guarantee against entry or injury, and it does its best work alongside locks, lighting and alarms.

Look after K-Shield film much as you would the glass itself. Clean it with a soft cloth and a mild, non-abrasive, ammonia-free cleaner, and keep blades, scrapers and abrasive pads away from the surface.

Tempered glass is made to break into small pieces, so the film's job there is keeping those pieces together. Because the whole pane can let go at once, how the film relates to the frame matters more than it does on other glass. There is no single answer that fits every opening: the glazing and the frame should be identified first, and your installer will advise what is appropriate for that window.

Laminated glass already has an interlayer bonding two panes together, so it tends to stay in one piece when struck. Security film adds a further bonded layer on the room side and can complement what the laminate is already doing. Whether it is worth adding depends on the glazing and what you want to achieve, which is a good conversation to have with your dealer before anything is specified.

Thickness alone does not settle it. A good security film balances glass retention with clear vision, and how it performs on your building depends on the film specified, the glazing it goes on and how carefully it is fitted. Different glass types behave differently when they break, so the existing glazing should be identified before a film is chosen. Kepler's K-Shield range is built for this work. Security film and anti-graffiti film answer different problems. Safety and security film is normally applied to the inside face of the glass, where it helps hold a broken pane together after an impact. Damage caused on the outside of the pane, such as scratching, etching or paint, is a separate issue. Anti-graffiti film is a removable surface layer fitted to the outer face, so where damage is confined to that layer the film can be replaced to restore the appearance. In short, security film is an internal reinforcement, while anti-graffiti film is applied externallyas a sacrificial skin, and the two are removed in different ways. In practice the two terms describe much the same product, and they are often used interchangeably. Both are built to hold broken glass together. "Safety" tends to emphasize reducing injury from fragments after an accident or impact, while "security" emphasizes slowing forced entry. The underlying idea is the same in either case: keeping the glass in place once it breaks.

Annealed glass tends to break into larger shards that stay in place more readily, which gives the film something to hold on to. Film applied to annealed glazing helps keep those pieces bonded together, reducing loose glass and making the opening slower to get through. As always, the glass should be identified before a film is specified, because the same product behaves differently on different glazing.

It depends on the glazing and the frame. Attaching the film at the edge is one of the options an installer may consider, particularly where a whole pane can release at once, but it is not a standard extra on every job. A dealer will look at the glass type, the frames and what you want the film to do, then explain what they recommend for your building.
