Safety window film is a tough, clear film applied to the inside face of existing glass. It bonds to the pane so that if the glass breaks, the film can help hold the pieces together rather than letting them fall away, spreading the force of an impact across a wider area. That does two things: it makes forced entry through the glazing slower, and it reduces the amount of loose glass in the room. K-Shield is Kepler's safety and security film, used on both commercial and residential glazing. It is a protective layer, not a guarantee against entry or injury.

Untreated glass offers little resistance once it breaks. Depending on the type of glass, a struck pane can come apart and leave the opening clear, which is exactly what an intruder is counting on and what makes an accident dangerous. Security film can change that behavior. Because the film is bonded across the whole pane, broken glass tends to stay attached to it, so the force of a blow is spread outward and the opening is less likely to empty in one hit. An intruder may have to keep striking the same spot, in the open, making noise, which can be enough to end the attempt. The same property helps in an accident: fragments held in the frame are fragments that are not on the floor. This is why security film is common in schools, offices and public buildings where large panes sit close to people. It is a delaying and containing layer rather than a guarantee against entry or injury, and it is most effective as part of a wider security plan.

K-Shield security and safety films need very little looking after. Clean them with a soft microfiber cloth and a gentle, ammonia-free cleaner, and keep abrasive pads, blades and scouring products away from the surface so the film does not get scratched.

Regular, gentle cleaning keeps the film looking right and performing as it should.

Tempered glass typically breaks into small pieces, and once it does the whole pane loses its rigidity. Film bonded across the pane helps keep those pieces together, but what happens at the edges of the opening matters too, since fragments can be pushed past the frame. Your installer will look at the glass, the frame and the film before advising on how it should be finished at the edges. Identifying the glazing you have is the first step in any security film project.

Laminated glass already has a plastic interlayer between two panes, which is why it tends to stay in one piece when it breaks. Security film adds to that behavior, reinforcing the outer surface and helping to keep the assembly together after an impact. If your building has laminated glazing, mention it when you enquire, as it affects which film makes sense and how the job is approached.

A good security film is not simply the thickest one on the shelf. What matters is how the film and its adhesive behave when the glass is struck, and how well the whole assembly suits the glazing already in the building. Identify what you have first, because annealed, tempered and laminated glass all break differently and that affects what the film can achieve. It can help. Security film reinforces the glass and makes it more resistant to impact damage, and K-Shield is applied to the interiorface of the glass, where it helps hold broken pieces together. Anti-graffiti film is a different product, applied externally as a sacrificial surface layer that protects the glass exterior from scratching, etching and paint. Anti-graffiti film is thinner and made for external use, and its removable adhesive means it can be taken off and replaced to restore appearance when the damage is confined to that layer. In practice the two terms describe the same kind of product, and they are often used interchangeably. Both are tough films bonded to the glass, and both work by helping to keep a broken pane together, whether the break comes from an attempted entry, an accident or severe weather. The emphasis simply shifts with the application: safety when the concern is loose glass and injury, security when the concern is forced entry.

Annealed glass breaks differently from tempered glass, tending to crack into larger pieces rather than granulating. Those larger pieces stay attached to the film readily, which helps the pane hold its shape after an impact and keeps glass in the opening. Because glazing varies from building to building, an installer will confirm what you have before recommending a film and how it should be finished.

Attaching the film at the edge of the opening is one of the options an installer will consider, and whether it is worthwhile depends on the type of glass, the frame and the film being used. It matters most where the glass breaks into small pieces that could be pushed past the frame. Rather than assuming one approach, ask the Kepler dealer quoting your job to assess the glazing and explain what they recommend and why.
