Window film manages what comes through the glass: ultraviolet light, infrared heat and glare. Compare like with like. Ask which range and which shade is being quoted, because a dyed film and a nano-ceramic IR+ film can look similar on the car and perform very differently, and ask for the published figures for that exact shade rather than a headline number for the whole range. Check what the warranty covers and who administers it. Confirm that the finished glass and film together will meet the Connecticut limit on the windows where it applies, since that is what the DMV measures. Start with the problem you want solved. If it is heat and glare, look at the nano-ceramic ranges, which are metal-free and leave phone and GPS reception intact. If it is privacy, the shade percentage matters more than the technology, within what the law allows on each window. If it is the appearance of a building, the choice is between neutral, ceramic, reflective and dual-reflective finishes, and the glazing already in the frame affects how any of them will perform. Bring those priorities to a dealer and the range narrows quickly.

Connecticut sets a light transmission limit and enforces it through DMV inspection. Side and rear windows may be tinted provided at least 35 percent of light still passes through the darkened window, with reflectivity no higher than 27 percent, and the DMV measures to a tolerance of plus or minus three percent when issuing a tint compliance sticker. Any window darkened after factory delivery counts as aftermarket tint and has to be inspected, with the sticker affixed by the DMV. There are exemptions: on trucks, buses and vehicles identified as multipurpose passenger vehicles on the door-jamb label, the windows behind the driver may be as dark as you like provided the vehicle has left and right side mirrors, and the rear-most window is exempt where both mirrors are fitted. A medical exemption can be granted for tint between 32 percent and not less than 20 percent, and tint below 20 percent fails the measurement. Check the current DMV guidance before you book, because the limit applies to the glass and film together rather than to the film on its own.

That is a question for the dealer doing the work, because it depends on the vehicle or the number of panes, the film chosen and the state of the glass. What is worth knowing beforehand is that film needs time to cure after fitting, and your dealer will tell you how long to leave the windows alone and when any last haze should have cleared. Leave the film to cure before cleaning it, following the timing your dealer gives you for the film that was fitted. After that a soft cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner are all it needs; keep scouring pads, blades and harsh solvents away from the coated side. A little haze or a few small bubbles in the first days are normally moisture still leaving the adhesive, and anything still there once the film has cured should go back to the dealer who fitted it.

Solar heat enters a building through the glass: the pane absorbs energy from the sun and transfers it into the room, which is what overheats a bright room and makes cooling equipment work harder. Solar-control film reduces how much of that energy gets through, and Kepler publishes a total solar heat rejection figure for each architectural film and shade. How much that changes a bill depends on your glazing, the orientation and area of the windows and how the building is heated and cooled, so treat film as one part of that picture rather than a guaranteed saving. It depends on what the glass is doing to the space. Where rooms overheat, where glare lands on screens, where furnishings and floors are fading, or where you want daytime privacy without boarding up the daylight, film deals with the problem at the window instead of with blinds or a heavier cooling load.
