One point causes more confusion than any other: visible light transmission describes how much light passes through the film and is a separate measure from solar heat performance. A darker film is not automatically the better performer, so compare the exact film and shade you are considering.

Look for someone who asks about the glazing and the problem before quoting a shade, and who can tell you what the specific film is designed to do rather than talking in generalities. Ask to see the performance figures for the exact product and shade, ask what warranty applies to that film and that type of work, and ask what the film will look like from outside as well as from within. It depends on the size and complexity of the job, and no honest answer covers every case. In Kentucky, car window tinting varies with the vehicle, the glazing and how many windows are being done, while home and commercial work depends on the number and size of the panes and on access to them. Freshly applied film needs time to settle, so leave it alone at first and ask your dealer how long to wait before the first clean; a little haze or the odd small water pocket in the early days is normal and usually clears on its own. After that, clean with a soft cloth and a gentle, non-abrasive cleaner, and keep scrapers, scouring pads and harsh products away from the surface. Take care around film edges, and on vehicles be mindful of seat belts and hard objects knocking the inside of the glass. Looked after sensibly, film keeps its clarity and appearance for the long term.

Film designed for solar heat reduces how much of the sun's energy comes through the glass, which is why a treated room usually feels more even through the afternoon and why cooling equipment has less work to do at the hottest part of the day. How much difference it makes depends on the film, the glazing, the orientation of the windows and how the building is used, so nobody can put a figure on your bill in advance. It is worth it where there is a problem to solve. In homes, that is usually comfort, glare or daytime privacy in a specific room. In workplaces, it tends to be screen glare, a hot side of the building, or the appearance of a storefront. Security film is a different proposition again: it is designed to help hold broken glass together, which can slow an attempt on the glazing, but it is not a guarantee against entry or injury. Anti-graffiti film, as a category, works as a removable surface layer — where damage is confined to that layer, replacing it can restore the appearance of the glass without touching the glass itself.
