Ontario, California
California sets the tint rules that apply to vehicles driven in Ontario, and they are worth understanding before you choose a film. This page explains how the limits are structured, what happens if your glass falls outside them, and how modern film can deliver heat performance without going as dark as you might expect.

Film that falls outside the California limits can lead to a citation. A fix-it ticket typically means correcting the glass and providing proof that the vehicle now complies, which is an avoidable expense if the film is chosen carefully in the first place.
Removing non-compliant film is rarely quick. Adhesive residue is common, and rear glass with heating elements needs care. Choosing a compliant film at the outset avoids the problem.
California treats passenger vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles such as SUVs, vans and trucks differently, and the limits vary by window position. Knowing which category your vehicle falls into, and what is already on the glass, is the starting point for any tint decision. The panels below set out how the rules are organized.
Passenger Vehicles
For cars, including convertibles, the rules set limits window by window rather than applying one figure across the whole vehicle.
A non-reflective tint / sun strip, is allowed 4 inches from the top as long as it does not go past the AS-1 line on your windshield.
The California law allows 70% of light visibility for front side windows.
The California law allows any shade of light visibility for rear side windows.
The California law allows any shade of light in visibility for the rear window.

Kepler IR and IR+ are nano-ceramic ranges built around infrared performance rather than shade, so lighter films are worth considering. Visible light transmission is separate from solar heat performance, so compare the exact film and shade.
