Security window film is a strong, optically clear layer applied to the interior surface of glass in windows and doors. Kepler's K-Shield uses a thick film and an aggressive adhesive so that, if the glass is struck and breaks, the fragments tend to stay bonded to the film rather than falling away. That can slow an opportunist attack and reduce the risk of injury from loose glass, but no film turns a window into a barrier and none of it is a guarantee against entry. The film does not make glass unbreakable. What it does is bond to the pane so that, when the glass fractures, the pieces are held on the film instead of collapsing into the room. It is a common choice for schools, offices and public buildings where large panes sit at ground level. Combined with good locks, lighting and alarms, it adds a layer of delay that is missing when glass is left untreated.

K-Shield needs very little care. Clean it with a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, ammonia-free cleaner, and keep abrasive pads, scrapers and blades away from the surface. Allow any newly applied film to cure fully before the first clean; your installer will tell you how long to wait. Looking after the surface this way keeps the film clear and helps it last.

Tempered glass breaks into small pieces across the whole pane, so a film applied to the glass alone can be pushed out of the frame with the fragments still attached. Whether that is appropriate depends on the frame, the glazing and the exposure, so have your installer inspect the windows before work is quoted.

Laminated glass already has an interlayer bonded between two panes, so it is designed to stay together when struck. Adding security film gives the exposed surface a further layer and can also help with UV, glare or appearance depending on the product chosen. Because the laminate does much of the retention work, the specification is usually simpler, but the glazing should still be identified before a film is selected.

The right film depends on the glass it is going onto and what you want it to do. K-Shield 8mil is Kepler's heavier safety and security film, chosen where impact resistance and glass retention matter most, and it stays clear enough to keep a shopfront or office looking open. Thinner safety films suit lighter glazing or applications where you mainly want the glass held together. Because annealed, tempered and laminated glass all break differently, an installer should identify your existing glazing before recommending a film and an attachment method. Vandalism usually means impact, thrown objects or scratching. A security film can help hold a broken pane together after a strike, which keeps the opening closed until the glass is replaced and limits the mess and hazard left behind. Surface damage such as scratching or etching is a different problem: that is handled by anti-graffiti film, a thinner sacrificial layer applied over the glass. In practice the two terms overlap. Both describe thicker films that bond to the glass and hold fragments together when a pane breaks. "Safety" usually emphasizes protection from flying glass and accidental breakage, while "security" emphasizes delaying forced entry, and heavier films are generally specified for the latter. The underlying technology is the same, and the right choice comes down to your glass, your building and what you want the film to achieve.

An edge bond connects the film to the window frame rather than just the glass, so the whole assembly resists being pushed inward. It is most often discussed for tempered glass, where the pane breaks into small pieces, and is less often needed on annealed or laminated glazing. The right answer depends on your frames and how the windows are used, so ask the installer to assess the openings and explain what they recommend and why.
