No, and the two ranges are built differently for good reason. Automotive film is made for curved toughened glass in a frame that moves, which is what our car window tinting servicecovers. Architectural film has to sit on flat glass that may be double glazed, coated or laminated, where the heat the film absorbs has far less room to escape and thermal stress becomes the thing to design around. For a house, ask for the architectural range.

It is a real risk and worth understanding rather than dismissing. Film increases the solar energy a pane absorbs, and absorbed heat is what drives thermal stress fractures, particularly on large, partly shaded or already chipped glass. Kepler's warranty reflects that rather than denying it: our commercial window tinting and residential films carry thermal glass breakage cover of five years on the Cosmic, Chromosphere, Ecliptic, Polaris and K-Shield families, two years on Aurora and none at all on Orbit. Tell your dealer what the glass is, and where it is shaded, before a film is chosen.

Work backwards from the problem. If the room overheats, start with the ceramic and solar control ranges; if it is overlooked, start with frosted or reflective; if the glass itself is the worry, start with K-Shield. Then look at the finish, because that is the part you live with every day, and judge a shade on real glass rather than a swatch. Once you have a shortlist, a quick quoteputs it in front of the dealer who would do the work.

They can tell you what suits the glazing you actually have, which is the one thing a website cannot decide for you.

It can, and it is the window manufacturer rather than Kepler who decides. Some sealed unit warranties exclude applied films, or particular types of film, so check your paperwork or ask whoever supplied the glazing before anything goes on the glass. Kepler's own cover is separate: a ten year limited film product warranty for the original purchaser, non transferable, claimed through the installing dealer, and it does not cover installation workmanship.

Thermal stress. Glass expands where the sun lands on it and stays cool where the frame shades the edge, and a film that raises absorption widens that difference. Edge damage from the original glazing, heavy shading or furniture pushed against the inside face, and unusually large panes all add to it. That is why the film should be matched to the glass in front of it rather than picked on looks alone, and why your dealer should be looking at the pane, its size and its shading before agreeing anything.

Most of the range can. The film is lifted in one operation and the adhesive residue then has to be cleaned off the glass properly, which is work worth handing to the people who do it every week. Orbit is the exception, because Kepler lists it with a permanent adhesive bond, so choose it where you intend the glass to stay blacked out. If you want existing film taken off before new film goes on, say so in the enquiry and the dealer can price both.

Four things, in the order most people care about: it cuts solar heat coming through the glass, it takes out 99% of ultraviolet, it reduces glare, and depending on the film it changes what can be seen through the window. Safety film adds a fifth by helping to hold a broken pane together. What it does not do is turn single glazing into double glazing, and the numbers move with the film and the shade you pick.

It reduces the solar heat gain your cooling system has to deal with, which is the mechanism behind any saving. Sunlight is absorbed by the glass and passed into the room; a solar control film turns part of that away before it gets in, so the air conditioning works less hard on the afternoons that matter.

How much that is worth depends on your house: which way the glass faces, how much of it there is, what glazing is already fitted and how you run the cooling. Kepler publishes the solar performance of each film, but nobody can convert that into a number on your bill without seeing the building, so be wary of anyone who offers one.
