The pane still breaks, but the pieces stay bonded to the film, and the person outside has to keep hitting it where the street can see them. Anywhere holding stock that moves fast, electronics and tools especially, has the most to gain, because a smash and grab depends on the first hit working.

Glass does not have to be attacked to hurt someone. A ladder goes through a lobby window, a mower throws a stone, a door catches a January gust. Ordinary annealed glass is not treated to break into small particles the way tempered glass is, so it comes apart in large pieces with sharp edges, right where people walk. Film holds those pieces on the sheet, so a broken window becomes something to sweep up rather than something to step around. That is why schools, lobbies and busy retail floors fit it even where theft is not the worry.

Vermont builds and renovates to the Vermont Fire and Building Safety Code, now in its 2025 edition, which adopts the 2021 International Building Code and the 2021 NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Film is a retrofit, not a substitute for what the code asks of your glazing: applying K-Shield to a pane does not turn it into code-rated safety glass, and nothing here is a compliance opinion. Where a requirement applies to your glass, settle that with the Division of Fire Safety or your architect first, then fit film for what it genuinely does.

A Vermont shopfront is mostly glass, and it is glass at street level with the stock right behind it. Film on the inside of that window means a thrown rock or a swung bar leaves a broken pane that is still holding together rather than a clean hole to reach through. It is a clear film bonded to the inside face of your glass. K-Shield, Kepler's 8 mil version, uses a strong adhesive that grips the whole pane, so when the glass breaks the pieces stay stuck to the film instead of falling loose. That does two things. It helps retain broken fragments, while any added resistance to entry and retention in the frame depend on the glass, frame and attachment. It is not bulletproof and it does not make glass unbreakable. What it does is hold the broken glass together and buy you time.

Hard enough to change the plan. An unfilmed pane goes in one hit and leaves a clean opening to climb through. A filmed pane breaks and then holds together on the adhesive, spreading each blow across the whole sheet, so getting in means hit after hit, loudly and in the open. Be clear about what that is worth: film does not stop a determined intruder and it will not resist a bullet. What it takes away is the speed and the quiet.

Give the film time to cure after fitting, and your installer will tell you how long that is, then clean it like any other window: a soft cloth and a mild cleaner, with no ammonia and nothing abrasive. Scourers, blades and gritty cloths will scratch it.

Tempered glass is the awkward one. It is treated so that a break at any point fragments the whole pane into small particles at once, which leaves the film very little glass to hold on to. That is why an edge attachment, which fixes the film to the frame itself rather than to the glass, is worth raising for tempered panes. Kepler publishes no attachment specification for K-Shield, so ask your installer what they would propose and have it priced separately.

Laminated glass is already two or more pieces of glass bonded to a layer of resilient plastic, so it holds its own pieces when it breaks. K-Shield over the top adds another bonded layer and the UV protection Kepler lists for the film, and it gives the exposed inner face something to hold on to. Whether the assembly also wants an edge attachment depends on the frame rather than the film, so leave that to the installer looking at it.

Thickness is the number everyone asks about, and K-Shield is 8 mil, but the film is only half the answer. How your glass breaks matters just as much. Tempered glass is treated so that a break at any point fragments the whole pane into small particles, while ordinary annealed glass is untreated and comes apart in large pieces that stay held on the film. Ask what film, what glass and what edge treatment are being quoted, and compare all three rather than the mil figure on its own.

Damage to the external face is a different job: anti-graffiti film is a thinner sacrificial layer applied to the outside of the glass and replaced once it has been scratched or tagged. Security film is thicker, internal and bonded hard; anti-graffiti film is thin, applied externally and made to come off again. They are the same product doing the same thing, and Kepler sells one film for both. Safety describes what happens by accident, a pane broken by a ladder, a storm or somebody falling against it. Security describes what happens on purpose. Either way, the film holds the broken glass together rather than letting it fall loose.
