South and west glass gets genuinely hot in Vermont for a couple of months a year, and in a glass-fronted office, showroom or restaurant those are the months people complain. Solar control film works on the pane itself: part of the sun's energy is reflected straight back off the glass, and part is absorbed before it ever reaches the room. The cooling has less to fight, the temperature across the floor evens out, and the desk by the window stops being the one nobody wants. Kepler's neutral, reflective, dual-reflective and ceramic ranges all do this. What separates them is how much daylight and how much mirror you get along with it.

An office usually has two problems at the same window: heat on the desks and light on the screens. Low sun lands on a monitor two desks back, and there is no blind position that fixes it without turning the daylight off and the lights on. Film cuts the brightness at the glass and leaves you the view, which is the better trade for most floors, and it takes the heat out at the same time, so the corner nobody sits in during July becomes usable again and the cooling stops cycling against one hot elevation. If your office is open-plan with glass on more than one side, tell your dealer which way each elevation faces. The answer is usually a different film on different walls rather than one film everywhere.

Frosted film gives you a wall you can still see daylight through. Aurora is Kepler's white frosted range, and it goes onto the glass you already have: meeting rooms, glass partitions, washroom windows, a reception desk that should not be on display from the street. It reads as sandblasted glass without touching the glass, and it stays a surface layer, so a change of layout later is a change of film rather than a change of glazing. Cut bands, patterns and logos are ordinary work on frosted film.

It is the simplest way to add privacy to a room without rebuilding it.

Reflective film works on the difference in light. By day the outside is brighter than the inside, so the glass reads as a mirror from the street and stays see-through from your desk. After dark, with your lights on, it swaps round, which is worth knowing before you rely on it for a ground-floor office, a clinic or a treatment room. Chromosphere is Kepler's reflective range, in 19% and 30%, and it gives the strongest daytime privacy and the most mirrored exterior. Ecliptic is the dual-reflective compromise: outward reflectivity for privacy, with a cleaner view from the inside.

Fading is the slow one. Merchandise in a display window, upholstery, a timber counter, printed menus and signage: sunlight takes the colour out over a season or two, and it does not come back. Ultraviolet is the part of daylight doing much of that damage, and blocking UV is how window film reduces it. Kepler publishes 99% UV rejection across its architectural range, near-clear ceramic shades included, so a shop can keep a bright frontage and still cut the fading. Film reduces fading rather than ending it, since visible light and heat play their part too, but on a south-facing display window the difference is easy to see.

Vermont is a heating state, not a cooling one. The whole of it sits in climate zone 6A, and the commercial energy standard designs to 7,626 heating degree days, so most of what you do to the envelope is about keeping warmth in. Solar control film does not do that: it is not insulation, and it blocks sun in January as readily as in July. Where it earns its place is the glass that overheats, glares and fades things anyway, so west elevations, south-facing storefronts, atriums and floors full of screens. Put it there and leave the rest of the building alone.

Glare gets film specified more often than heat does, and Vermont makes it worse in winter rather than summer. The sun sits low from November on, snow throws light back up off the ground, and a window ends up lit from above and below at once. Blinds solve that by removing the view and the daylight together, so the lights go on at eleven in the morning and nobody opens them again until spring. Film works differently: it cuts the brightness at the glass and leaves the window doing its job. On a floor of screens that is the whole difference, because people stop squinting, stop shuffling monitors and stop drawing the blinds by default. Kepler's ceramic and neutral ranges take glare down without a heavy tint; the dual-reflective and reflective ranges take more of it out where the exposure is severe. Which one suits you comes down to the elevation and how much light you are willing to give up.

Security film is thicker film. K-Shield is 8 mil, and Kepler makes it to help hold shattered glass together rather than to stop the glass breaking. That distinction is worth being clear about, because it is what you are actually buying. The pane still cracks when it is hit; what changes is that the fragments stay bonded to the sheet and the sheet stays in the frame. An opening that used to take one swing takes sustained work in full view of the street. For a shopfront with stock behind it, a pharmacy counter, a ground-floor office or a school corridor, that delay is the product. It also means a broken window is a cracked window rather than a floor covered in glass, which matters to anyone standing near it. Kepler publishes K-Shield as an 8 mil safety and security film with UV protection and publishes no forced-entry, blast or storm rating for it, so treat it as glass retention and settle the frame and any attachment with your dealer as part of the specification.

Most broken glass in a workplace is an accident rather than a break-in: a pallet truck, a ladder, a door caught by the wind, a glass partition somebody walks into. Safety film bonds to the pane and is made to hold the fragments in place when it goes, which is the difference between a cracked sheet you board over and a cleanup with an injury report attached. It is worth specifying on internal glass partitions, low panes beside circulation routes and any glazing above head height. None of it changes how the room looks, because the film is clear and the partition still reads as a partition.

On a street frontage, anti-graffiti film is a sacrificial layer. It goes over the outside face of the glass and takes the scratching, etching and spray paint that would otherwise land on the pane itself. When it has had enough, the film comes off, a new one goes on, and the window underneath is the window you started with. That is the whole argument for it: a storefront that gets tagged repeatedly stops being a glass replacement problem and becomes a maintenance item with a known job attached. It suits ground-floor retail, glazed entrances and anywhere the same pane keeps getting hit. It is not a security film and it will not hold a broken pane together, so if you want both, they are specified separately.
