No — home film and car film are different products, specified separately. It can, and the film industry treats it as a real risk. Film changes how much solar energy a pane absorbs, and glass breaks under thermal stress when one part of it runs hotter than another. Tempered glass shrugs off very large differences and heat-strengthened glass resists them well; ordinary annealed float glass is the one that should always be assessed for film-to-glass compatibility first. So tell your Kepler dealer what glass you have, and if you are not sure, say so. Our commercial window tinting ranges are chosen the same way, for the same reason.

Go room by room rather than house-wide. Decide whether the complaint is heat, glare, privacy or fading, note which way the window faces and what glass is in it, and the range mostly picks itself: Polaris where the room should stay bright, Chromosphere or Ecliptic where privacy and solar control matter together, Aurora or Orbit where light itself is the point. Unlike a car there is no legal limit to work around, since Virginia’s tinting statute covers vehicles on the highway and not the windows of a house, so the choice is entirely about the room. It can, so give it an hour before you commit. Some window and glazing manufacturers restrict or exclude applied films in their written terms, particularly on sealed double-glazed units and coated glass. Read your own manufacturer’s wording rather than relying on a general assurance, and tell your Kepler dealer what it says so the film can be chosen around it. Kepler’s own warranty is separate: ten years, limited and non-transferable, covering confirmed manufacturing defects in the film for the original purchaser, with a limited glass and seal allowance on some ranges. Ask your dealer for the current warranty document for the film you are quoted.

Because the sun heats a pane unevenly. The middle of the glass in full sun runs hot while the edge held in the frame, or a corner shaded by a reveal, stays cooler, and the glass has to carry that difference. A film’s solar absorption is the property that matters most here, and it is judged against the particular glass rather than in isolation. That is why the film, the glass type and the shading on the window are assessed together, and why annealed glass in particular is checked for film-to-glass compatibility before anything goes on it.

Usually, yes. Film goes on the face of the glass and comes off again, though the adhesive residue has to be cleaned off properly if the window is to look right afterwards. One exception is worth knowing up front: Orbit, the blackout film, installs with a permanent adhesive bond. If a room might change use later, say so while you are choosing, and go back to the dealer who fitted the film when you want it off.

It takes the solar heat out of the rooms that overheat, cuts the glare on screens and countertops, rejects 99% of ultraviolet light and reduces the radiant energy that fades curtains, furniture and floors, and — depending on the range — gives you daytime privacy. In a warm, humid Virginia summer the first two do most of the work. K-Shield adds a fifth job: helping hold shattered glass together when a pane breaks.

By cutting the solar heat coming through the glass, which is the load the air conditioning is fighting on a hot, humid afternoon. Film is not insulation and it does not change the window itself, so treat it as a way to bring a hot room back into use rather than a predicted saving on the bill. Ask your dealer what the specific film rejects on the glass you have.

Cosmic is the neutral solar film, Chromosphere the silver reflective one, Ecliptic dual reflective, Polaris the ceramic that keeps a room bright, Aurora white frosted and Orbit true blackout — plus K-Shield, the 8 mil safety and security film. The published shades run from 08% at the darkest end of Ecliptic to 68% in Polaris; the frosted and blackout films are not specified by shade.
