Window Tinting in Washington

Film changes what your glass does with sunlight. Every Kepler film blocks 99 percent or more of UV, which is what saves upholstery, flooring and furniture from fading, and the darker shades take the edge off glare and make it harder to see in. Heat is measured separately from shade, so a darker film is not automatically a cooler one — compare the two on the same glass.

Compare like with like. Ask for the visible light transmission and the solar performance of the exact film and shade being quoted, measured on the same kind of glass, and ask which warranty terms come with it. Kepler's automotive range is nano-ceramic; the architectural range runs from neutral solar control through reflective and dual reflective to ceramic, frosted and blackout, plus the 8 mil K-Shield laminate. The right answer depends on the glass and on what you want back from the car or the room, not on one headline percentage.

Start with the glass and the problem. On a car the shade is the decision, and because Washington reads its light-transmission limit through the glass and the film together, your dealer should confirm the combination before anything is cut. On a building, identify the glazing that is already in the frame first: the existing glass and any coating on it change what a film can do and which ones are suitable at all. Then pick the effect you are after, whether that is heat, glare, privacy, decoration, or a laminate that holds broken glass together.

Washington's rules sit in RCW 46.37.430. Every window except the windshield has to let at least 24 percent of the light through and reflect no more than 35 percent, and that is read on the glass and the film together. Only one sheet of film per window, and the car needs outside mirrors on both sides once film is on. On the windshield you can tint the top strip only, as far as the AS-1 line or six inches down, and it has to be transparent. No mirror finishes, no red, gold, yellow or black film, and nothing brushed or sprayed on. Trucks, motor homes and multipurpose passenger vehicles may go darker behind the driver if reflectance stays at 35 percent or under and the vehicle has mirrors on both sides. Written verification from a licensed physician allows a driver or passenger more. A shop that tints for a living also has to add a sticker to the driver's door post with its name and state tax number.

That is your dealer's answer rather than Kepler's. Dealers are independent businesses and set their own scheduling, so confirm timing with the one your enquiry reaches. What Kepler can tell you is what moves it: the number of windows, the shape of the glass, whether old film has to come off first, and whatever the installer asks you to allow afterwards before the glass is cleaned or the windows are wound down.

Ask the business that fitted it. The installer knows exactly which film went onto your glass, and Kepler routes replacement and warranty support through that company rather than dealing with owners directly. Two things are worth asking about specifically: how long to leave the film before the glass is cleaned or, in a car, before the windows are wound down, and which cleaners and cloths are safe to use on it. If the film itself goes wrong, bubbling, peeling or fading, that is a warranty matter and the claim goes back through the same business.

Film cuts the solar heat coming through your glass. What that saves on a bill depends on your building, your glazing and how you cool it, so Kepler does not put a figure on it. Washington is a good case for it either way: in the marine climate along the Pacific Coast, 49 percent of homes used air conditioning against 88 percent nationally, so the glass is often the first line of defense rather than the second. The state is really two climates too — west of the Cascades the summers stay mild, while central and eastern Washington swing much further through the year.

It depends on what the glass is doing to the space. Solar-control film takes heat and glare out of rooms that overheat. Frosted and blackout films handle privacy and light. K-Shield, the 8 mil laminate, is for glass that needs help staying in one piece after an impact, and how much help it gives depends on the frame and the fixing as much as the film, so have the whole window looked at. What film cannot do is change the glazing itself, so identify the glass and any coating on it first: that decides which films are suitable at all.
