No. Kepler publishes two separate lines and they are not interchangeable. The architectural range, Cosmic, Chromosphere, Ecliptic, Polaris, Aurora, Orbit and K-Shield, is made for building glass, while Kepler IR and IR+ are the nano-ceramic films behind our car window tinting service. The two are built for different glass, sold in different shade tables and covered by different warranties. Putting a film on glass outside the manufacturer’s film-to-glass guidance is also where thermal stress problems start: the International Window Film Association notes that film manufacturers publish film-to-glass tables for their dealers for precisely this reason.

Thermal stress is a real risk with any applied film, on home glass and on the glass our commercial window tinting covers too. Glass breaks when it is stressed, and a film changes how much solar energy a pane absorbs. The International Window Film Association’s position is that manufacturers publish film-to-glass tables so a dealer can match the two. Matched properly the risk is low, but nobody can honestly call it zero. Tell your dealer what the glass is, whether single, a sealed unit, toughened, laminated or already low-e coated, before a shade is chosen.

Work backwards from the room. Decide first whether the problem is heat, glare, daytime privacy or a decorative finish, then find out what glass is already in the frame, then choose the shade. Kepler publishes a shade for most of those answers: 68% and 53% on Polaris at the clear end, 8% on Ecliptic at the dark end. Once you have the rooms in mind, start a quick quote.

That is a question for whoever warranties your windows, not one this page can answer for them. Some glass and window manufacturers place conditions on applied films, and those conditions vary by product. Kepler publishes no blanket statement that its film preserves a third party’s glass warranty, so please do not take one from us; get your window manufacturer’s written terms before the film goes on. What Kepler does publish is its own cover, which is a 10-year limited, non-transferable film-product warranty on the architectural range.

Thermal stress. Glass expands where the sun lands on it and stays cooler where the frame shades the edge, and a film that increases how much solar energy the pane absorbs widens that difference. Whether it matters depends on the glass: type, thickness, edge condition and whether it is a sealed unit. That is why the International Window Film Association points to the film-to-glass tables manufacturers publish for their dealers. Matching film to glass is the control, and no film, ceramic included, removes the risk entirely.

Yes. Film goes on the inside face of the glass and can be taken off again. The adhesive residue is the fiddly part, and glass, seals and any heating elements in the pane are what get damaged when removal is rushed, so it is worth treating removal as a job in its own right rather than something squeezed in ahead of a refit. Heat and glare taken out at the window, 99% UV rejection across Kepler’s home range, and daytime privacy where a room is overlooked. K-Shield adds an 8 mil film made to help hold shattered glass together. Fading slows rather than stops, because heat and visible light cause it as well as ultraviolet. How much any of it is worth to you depends on which of your windows take the sun.

By cutting the solar heat coming through the glass in summer, which is less for the cooling to remove. West Virginia is where the other half of that matters: NOAA records moderately cold winters here, so the heating season is long and a film that rejects solar gain rejects the free warmth in January too. Kepler publishes no energy-saving figure and this page will not supply one. The shade, and which elevation it goes on, decide it.

Kepler publishes its home films as named ranges. Cosmic is neutral, at 19% and 35% light transmission. Chromosphere is silver reflective, at 19% and 30%. Ecliptic is dual-reflective, at 8%, 14%, 27% and 37%. Polaris is ceramic and the clearest of them, at 53% and 68%. Aurora is a white frosted finish, Orbit a true blackout, and K-Shield an 8 mil safety and security film. All are listed at 99% UV rejection and carry a 10-year limited film-product warranty.
