Window Tinting in Texas

Three things, to start with. It cuts heat, so a car or a room is not still throwing it back at you at four in the afternoon. It cuts glare, which makes a screen readable and a drive into a low sun easier on the eyes. And it holds back the ultraviolet light that fades upholstery, rugs and floors. Darker shades add privacy on top of that, and safety film adds a layer designed to help hold the glass together if it breaks.

Kepler makes the film rather than fitting it, so the work goes into the material. The automotive ranges, Kepler IR and IR+, are nano-ceramic, 1.5 mil, and finished with a Scratch Guard+ coat; Kepler publishes 81% infrared rejection for IR and up to 98% for IR+. Start with what the window has to do, then check what the law allows. On a car's two front side windows Texas sets a floor: the film and the original glass together still have to let through at least 25% of visible light. The side windows behind the driver are exempt from that regulation, so they can go as dark as 4% if you want the back of the car private. The rear window is a separate case, with its own mirror condition. At home the question is comfort rather than law, and it comes down to how much heat you want gone and how much view you want to keep.

Texas DPS publishes them. On the windshield, film is allowed only above the AS-1 line, or ending five inches below the top of the windshield where there is no AS-1 line, and windshield film may not be red, amber or blue. That strip and both front side windows must let through at least 25% of visible light and reflect no more than 25%, measured with the film on the original glass rather than off the roll. The side windows behind the driver are completely exempt from the regulation. The rear window is unrestricted if the vehicle has an outside mirror on each side giving a view of the roadway at least 200 feet behind; without those mirrors it has to meet the same 25% figures. A clear, untinted UV film is allowed anywhere on the windshield without a medical exemption. One compliance label goes at the rearmost bottom corner of the driver's side window. If you need darker front glass for a medical reason, DPS asks for a signed statement from a licensed physician or optometrist; it stopped issuing exemption certificates on 1 January 2019, so keep the statement in the vehicle.

That depends on the vehicle or the building, and the dealer doing the work is the one who can tell you, so ask when you arrange it. With car window tinting , the vehicle itself makes most of the difference: how many windows there are and how sharply the glass curves. Film also needs time to cure once it is on, and how long that takes depends on the film and the weather.

Gently, and not straight away. Leave newly fitted film to cure before you clean it or wind a window down, and ask how long that takes for the film you have had fitted. After that a soft cloth and a mild cleaner is all it needs: no scrapers, no abrasive pads. Kepler's automotive films carry a Scratch Guard+ coat, though no coating survives something sharp dragged across it. If film bubbles, peels or lifts at a corner on its own, that is a warranty matter rather than a cleaning one.

It reduces the solar heat coming through the glass, which is one of the parts of a cooling load you can do something about, alongside insulation, shading and the system itself. Less heat arriving means the air conditioning has less to remove, but what that is worth on a bill depends on your glass, your building, your system and how you use it, so treat film as one measure among several rather than a figure anyone can forecast in advance. Existing coatings and double glazing change what a film can do and whether it suits the glass at all, so identify the glazing before choosing.

The reasons differ. At home it is comfort and protection: rooms that stay usable in the afternoon, less glare on screens, and less ultraviolet light reaching what is inside. In a business it is more often running costs, the look of the building and how comfortable it is to sit beside a window all day. If the concern is the glass itself rather than the sun, K-Shield is a safety film designed to help hold shattered glass together instead of letting it fall, though thickness alone is not a forced-entry or storm rating. Which of those matters most is usually what decides the film.
