No, and it is worth knowing why. Automotive film is made to curve onto vehicle side glass and to be looked through from a driving position. Household glazing is a different problem: sealed double units, low-e coatings, big fixed panes and frames that hold heat. Put the wrong film on the wrong pane and you can push the glass into thermal stress. Wisconsin's tint limits under Trans 305.32 apply to vehicles, not to your living room, so the numbers you may have read about, 50% light on front side windows and 35% on the rear, have nothing to do with your house. Use a residential film and let your dealer match it to your glass.

Both commercial window tinting and home window film absorb some solar energy, and any pane that takes on more heat than it was built for can crack. It is uncommon, and it is avoidable. The risk sits with the glass: how thick it is, annealed or tempered, single or a sealed double unit, whether it already carries a low-e coating, and how much of it sits in shade. Tell your dealer what you have before you settle on a shade, and read your window manufacturer's warranty while you are at it.

Start with the problem rather than the product. If a room overheats in summer, you are looking at solar control, so Cosmic or Chromosphere. If it is floors and furniture fading, every range handles UV and you can choose on looks alone. If you are overlooked, Ecliptic and Aurora solve that in very different ways. If you want glass that holds together, that is K-Shield. Then narrow it by how much daylight you are willing to give up: Polaris keeps a room bright at 53% or 68%, Cosmic runs at 19% and 35%, and Orbit is total blackout. In a Wisconsin house the dark end usually belongs on west and south glass, not on the north rooms that are already short of light in February.

In summer, on the sunny side of the house, it genuinely can: less solar heat through the glass is less work for the air conditioning. Winter is the honest part. The U.S. Department of Energy points out that solar control films block the sun's heat in winter too, which is why they suit climates with long cooling seasons, and Wisconsin's is not long. Expect film to earn its keep on south and west glass.
